Hawaiʻi is a 1,500-mile-long archipelago of 137 volcanic islands and atolls in the North Pacific. The state’s population of 1,446,146 is highly concentrated, with roughly two thirds of residents living on just one island, Oahu.
For the 2024–2025 school year, Hawaiʻi public schools enrolled 165,340 students across more than 290 schools. Of these, approximately 13,070 students — about 7.9 percent of total public school enrollment — attended one of the state’s 38 public charter schools.
